You have quite a few options when buying a timeshare. When looking ,you should decide if you would like to own a week that is a fixed week ( which means you own that particular week each year). This could be great, if you are happy going to your resort at the same time each year. It also saves you the hassle of picking a week and calling your resort each year to see if a particular week is available. A floating week can be 1-52 (the whole year or can be different times depending on what you own. An example of this would be I own a Red week in Palm desert, my floating weeks are 1-21 and 51 & 52. You could own blue or white which are less popular travel times due to the heat. It is all what you want to own and are willing to pay and how flexible you are.
Many people and resorts are opting for points. Points are suppose to make it more flexible for the owner. You have the option of staying the week or several days. You can get more days by staying during non peak time and use less points if you do not stay on a weekend night. Marriott has just introduced a new points system and is giving the option to existing owners to join or stay in the weeks progtram. All future sales of timeshares in Marriott will be Destination Points. There are many established points systems, Wyndham, RCI, Worldmark, Staroptions, Hilton, Hyatt and more. I do not have any experience with them but you can once again learn from the experts at (http://www.tug2.net/).
